GLEE – noun
1. open delight or pleasure; exultant joy; exultation.
2. an unaccompanied part song for three or more voices, popular especially in the eighteenth century.
This is a new singing group just for ladies who like singing, but wish they could sing better - and learn more about music.
We meet on Wednesday evenings, all through the year, as a learning group. We cover the language of music, but focus on singing technique and improving breathing, posture etc. It's deliberately stress-free, so we don’t give performances.
Because the emphasis is on the pleasurable side of music-making, and learning to work 'a capella' (without piano) it's a group just for ladies, to learn to sing in harmony in a friendly setting. Thus the name: The Albany Glee Club.
If you've sung before, there won't be any need to feel stuck in a rut of being either a soprano or an alto; you will be free to move around as much as you like! It's part of the fun of learning and trying new things.
Our meetings are from 8 pm to 10 pm, in Hersham. And, as in the eighteenth century when glee clubs were all the rage, there will be a coffee interval!
There's no need to pay on your first night but if you like it and want to come back, the cost is £78 for 12 weeks (holidays can be accommodated). The director is Georgina Colwell, a professional musician, conductor and singer.
